Dans un geste d’une rare barbarie, des employés de la Société de vélo en libre service (SVLS) de Montréal ont arraché, dans les premiers jours de mai, les 8000 citations qui avaient été apposées sur les ailes des Bixi.

Nous prenons position pour  la paix et la justice et nous déclarons profondément dégoûtés par les actions impardonnables des politiciens, leaders et membres des forces de l'ordre de la province de Québec qui se sont laissés aller à blesser, torturer, enfermer et vilipender publiquement son peuple.

Au-delà de l'évidente incurie, de l'incompétence et de la corruption qui entachent le gouvernement actuel et le parti qui le contrôle, Bike For Peace tient à condamner également les malfaiteurs financiers derrière cette atroce trahison.

Le monde commence à peine à se rendre compte de ce qui s'est produit dans la Belle province, mais au fur et à mesure que les faits font surface, le nombre augmente des citoyens de la Terre estomaqués par la vision du mépris qu'affiche cet état occidental soi-disant démocratique pour son peuple et pour les règles de base de la démocratie.

Synopsis
Girls in cycling friendly countries continue to cycle into adulthood, whilst in many other countries they tend to give up during the teenage years. Why?



Beauty and the Bike follows two groups of young women over a period of a year. One is from the Cycling Demonstration town of Darlington, England, where nearly all teenage girls have stopped using a bicycle. The other is from Bremen, where cycling is the transport mode of choice for most teenagers. Over the course of the year, each group visits the other to discover just why their habits - and attitudes towards cycling - are so different. 



What they find is a searing indictment of transport policy in the 21st century. To attract people to cycling, politicians need to make it actually attractive, rather than some kind of military expedition. With so much energy being spent looking for technological solutions, why are politicians so reluctant to do the obvious - build attractive cycling infrastructure?



The film concludes with the English girls expressing a new understanding of the political implications of their new-found love of cycling - the car needs to be tamed in our cities and towns, and space re-allocated to sustainable forms of transport.

Deux roues, un avenir

Acheté usagé, lu un peu par hasard, ce livre un peu daté (1994) est encore d'une pertinence et d'une actualité extraordinaire pour ce qui est de l'importance sociale, politico-économique et environnementale du cyclisme en milieu urbain.

L'auteure, Claire Morissette, fut journaliste, cyclo-militante et membre du collectif Le Monde à bicyclette, au sein duquel elle participa à de nombreuses actions procyclistes, dont le célèbre die-in de 1976.

When Steve Webb started looking for a partner to ride alongside him from Toronto to New York to help raise money and awareness for charity, he didn't have to look far.

The former Islander volunteers as an assistant coach with the Long Island Royals, an under-16 hockey team coached by Hockey Hall-of-Famer Pat LaFontaine. A close friend and veteran of multiple triathlons, LaFontaine was happy to join Webb.

But he had a problem with the time commitment. A ride like that, which travels approximately 550 miles, usually encompasses up to nine days.

"I said 'who has nine days, with kids and everything? Let's do it in 48 hours,'" LaFontaine told NHL.com. "We sat there and laughed. We kind of threw it out there and then we started talking about it."

What began as a laughable idea, though, is now a stark reality.

On Monday, LaFontaine and Webb will leave from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on a bike ride that will end a mere 48 hours later at the NHL Store in New York City.

The ambitious trip, which will raise awareness and money for LaFontaine and Webb's respective charities, as well as dementia and Alzheimer's research, has already drawn equal parts support and disbelief from former teammates.

"I just got off the phone with Brad Isbister. He says we're crazy," Webb told NHL.com. "Dave Scatchard is very supportive of the ride but still thinks we're crazy. Just about everybody we've talked to thinks we've gone off the rails. But we have a game plan and if we follow it properly, success should follow."

For Webb and LaFontaine, that game plan has been calculated down to the last calorie.

A team of about eight people will travel alongside them, helping to track caloric intake, heart rate, and other important variables. They'll even be playing music from an accompanying van. "I just hope Webby likes 70s music," joked LaFontaine. "If we have to listen to anything else, it could be a brawl out there."

With a live blog documenting their entire trip, the duo might seem an unlikely one considering how different the fleet-footed LaFontaine and tough-as-nails Webb were as players. It was actually LaFontaine who first got the former enforcer on a bicycle seven years ago, when he took Webb and then-Islanders defenseman Adrian Aucoin on a 100-mile "century ride." The results were mixed.

"Webby didn't bring the right nutrition. He didn't have breakfast, he thought 'this is going to be easy, I'm a hockey player.' He started getting really hungry about 60 miles in. I remember telling him, 'don't worry, the deli is just around the corner,'" said LaFontaine. "Then we get there and the deli is closed. You would have thought he was playing against the Rangers or something. He lost it, he just snapped."

Despite that bumpy first ride, Webb pursued bike riding full force and has embarked on a ride from Long Island to Peterborough, Ontario each of the past two summers. That ride, which generally takes between eight and nine days to complete, would form the basis for this project, which is raising funds for a number of causes, including both Webb and LaFontaine's personal charities.
